Talking to the public in real time

If someone isn't a part of the team, then it isn't a good idea to talk to them in real time:

  1. in real time, you don't have as long to think about clear wording or check your facts
  2. in real time, questions and answers tend to get muddled up. Just see this mess I made (that's why I wrote this)
  3. Never EVER talk to reporters or other people from outside the team on a public IRC or other forum. Otherwise any random troll can end up as a representative of us.

What to do if someone asks for comments in real time

Politely ask them to E-mail you or some other method.

If they insist, you have to use your judgement (some people will just make an even worse article without your imput)

If you decide to talk ask for questions in a list then answer them one by one, write a paragraph at a time if you have to, don't split over multiple lines.

If it's on IRC, open a private channel.
